Mount Kilimanjaro

Overview

The roof of Africa

Why Mount is unmissable

No technical skills are required to climb Kilimanjaro — only steady legs, sensible pacing and a great support crew. Three volcanic cones (Shira, Mawenzi, Kibo) form the massif; the summit reward is the ice-fields of the Rebmann and Furtwängler glaciers at dawn. Routes range from the scenic Machame to the remote Lemosho and the quiet Northern Circuit. Our certified guides, fair-wage porters and twice-daily health monitoring deliver summit success rates above 95%.

At 5,895 metres, Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain on Earth — a snow-capped giant rising alone out of the savanna. To climb it is to walk through five climate zones in a week, from dripping rainforest to arctic glaciers, and to watch the sun rise from the highest point on the African continent.

History & heritage

Kilimanjaro has intrigued outsiders since Johannes Rebmann's 1848 account of 'a snow mountain on the equator' was laughed at in Europe. Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller made the first recorded summit in 1889. The mountain is sacred to the Chagga people who farm its fertile foothills, and its shrinking glaciers have made it a global symbol of climate change — climb now, and climb respectfully.

Travel tips

Insider knowledge.

From our guides

  • 01Choose a 7+ day route — extra acclimatisation days are the single biggest success factor.
  • 02Train by hiking, not running: 6–8 weeks of day hikes prepare legs and lungs.
  • 03Break in your boots early; blister kits live in your daypack, not the duffel.
  • 04Pole pole — slowly. Summit day is a slow dance, never a sprint.
  • 05Celebrate with a safari or Zanzibar after — your legs will thank you.
