Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Overview

Eden in a caldera

Why Ngorongoro is unmissable

Ngorongoro is the easiest place on Earth to complete the Big Five in a single day, and arguably the most beautiful. Black rhinos graze open grasslands; flamingos freckle Lake Magadi; lion prides and spotted hyenas patrol between the Lerai Forest and the hippo-swamped Gorigor Swamp. Unlike national parks, the Conservation Area is shared with Maasai pastoralists, whose cattle graze the rim alongside zebras — a living model of coexistence.

Two and a half million years ago a volcano taller than Kilimanjaro collapsed into itself, creating the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Today the Ngorongoro Crater floor — 260 square kilometres encircled by 600-metre walls — holds some 25,000 large animals in the highest predator density in East Africa.

History & heritage

Maasai pastoralists arrived in the region around 1800 and still graze the crater floor. The name evokes the bell of the Maasai cattle — 'ngoro ningo.' Archaeologically, the wider conservation area holds Olduvai Gorge, where Louis and Mary Leakey unearthed hominid fossils that reshaped the human story. UNESCO inscribed the area in 1979 for both its natural and cultural significance.
