Why Tarangire is unmissable

Tarangire rewards those who linger. Away from the main gate the park empties intoAcacia woodlands and silent swamps where oryx, gerenuk and lesser kudu — species missing from most circuit itineraries — graze undisturbed. The park holds one of the continent's great elephant populations, spectacular birdlife (550+ species) and a haunting baobab-dotted landscape photographers fall in love with. Lions here famously climb trees, and in the green season the park turns emerald with newborn antelope.

In the dry season, Tarangire's river draws the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania outside the Serengeti — including elephant herds up to 300 strong, shaded by some of Africa's largest baobabs. It is the northern circuit's quietly brilliant over-achiever.

History & heritage

Gazetted in 1970, Tarangire takes its name from the river that threads it — the lifeline that pulls wildlife in from across the Maasai Steppe each dry season. The park anchors the larger Tarangire–Manyara ecosystem, where our company supports community conservancies that keep wildlife corridors open between the parks.
