Why Serengeti is unmissable

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Serengeti delivers what no photograph can fully promise: the sheer scale of the wild. The central Seronera Valley offers year-round big-cat viewing; the north hides the Mara River crossings; the south erupts with wildebeest calves each February. Beyond the famous species live cheetahs on termite mounds, leopards in sausage trees, 500 bird species and Maasai kopjes — granite islands stacked like ancient sculptures.

The Serengeti is not merely a park — it is the stage on which Africa performs its greatest story. Nearly 15,000 square kilometres of grassland, woodland and riverine forest host the Great Migration: almost two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles in a perpetual circuit pursued by the continent's largest lion population.

History & heritage

The name comes from the Maasai word siringet — 'the place where the land runs on forever.' Maasai grazed these plains for centuries before European explorers arrived in the 1800s. The park was gazetted in 1951 following landmark campaigns by conservationists, and in 1977 the Serengeti Research Institute made it one of science's great living laboratories. Today, anti-poaching units, research stations and community programs protect a ecosystem that has remained functionally intact for millennia.
