The experience
Turquoise oasis in the Maasai steppe
Chemka Hot Springs
Hidden among fig trees an hour from Moshi, Chemka (Kikuletwa) Hot Springs bubbles up at a perfect 30°C into a pool of impossible turquoise. Swing from a rope, drift among roots and minnows, picnic in the shade — the most blissful rest day in northern Tanzania, loved by climbers and safari-goers alike.
History & culture
The springs emerge from underground rivers filtered through Kilimanjaro's volcanic rock — warm, mineral-rich and improbably clear. Local Maasai and Pare communities have long used the site; today a community-managed fee keeps the oasis clean and funds local development.
